Sustainable Off-Grid Island Retreat
Ever dreamed of having your own off-grid cabin on an island? Alex Porter has realised this dream by creating an off-grid retreat for her father on a coastal island in Maine. The retreat is almost completely self-sufficient with solar panels and a large rainwater catchment tank providing for both their electricity and water needs. The home also has an on-demand to heat water for an outdoor shower and the sink, and is heated by a small wood burning stove.
The project (which was 30 years in the making) has a shed roof and features blue-grey corrugated steel cladding – a great option when it comes to dealing with those northern squalls.
This tiny house implements some great sustainable features, but the best aspect of this home is the beautiful surrounding, which it takes advantage of with the size and placement of its windows.
