A Sleek and Stylish Modern Small House

This funky small house has been designed by Sweet Sparkman (formerly TOTeMS Architecture). Called the Casey Key Guest House, the home can be found in Florida, USA.

The client asked the designers to provide a separate living space from the main home, where guests could stay. They also wanted panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and for it to be raising off the ground level due to a risk of flooding.

The sweeping, curved roof structure is composed of glued laminated timber (Glulam), and makes for a very unique form, both inside and out. The front end of the house is ‘open’ to the exterior with a large portion of the façade consisting of glass. Whereas the more private areas – bedroom and bathroom – are much more closed in, and concealed with few window openings.

The interior features pine timbers and wooden plank cypress for the main roof structure. The main living area contains a double-height space with floor-to-ceiling windows, creating both a light and spacious feel within the relatively small space.

The bedroom is found on the upper level of the main compartment that contains the bathroom and other utility spaces. The feeling of spaciousness is enhanced in the bedroom by leaving it open to the living area below, with some mid-height walls to create a degree of separation, and of course, provide safety and security to the occupants.

The home extends to the exterior through a cantilevered deck space, both on the ground floor and the first floor – an common trait among small and tiny houses.
