Copper Clad, Off-Grid Retreat
Australian architects, Caroline Casey and Robert Brown, created their very own off-grid retreat on a remote mountain. The tiny, two-story structure had to be prefabricated off-site, and transported to the rural location, where it was finally erected and secured to it’s foundation.
The walls of the retreat – called either ‘Permanent Camping or ‘Mudgee Tower’ – are clad with copper and can open upwards to reveal views of the surrounding landscape, when closed the solid cladding helps to protect the retreat from the elements, bush fires and interlopers.
Rainwater can be collected from the roof and stored in a large water tank, and heat (when needed) can be provided for by the wood burning stove.
Mudgee Tower features a sleeping loft, kitchen, and living area. The interior is clad with recycled ironbark.
