A School Bus Conversion to a Tiny House by Mira and Jeremy Von THompson

Today’s home has been created from the shell of an old school bus. Mira and Jeremy Von Thompson both grew up enjoying art, however, their love of the subject took them down different roads.

Jeremmy, who is now a carpenter, expresses his creativity through woodwork. Mira, on the other hand, found she had a talent for creating spaces. When you mix the two together, you end up with something entirely unique; a bespoke tiny home that reflects couples personality and lifestyle.

The couple finished their home in October of 2015. And, because it was a self-built project, they managed to complete it on a “very tight budget”. From the outside, if the front cab of the bus hadn’t been left exposed, there wouldn’t be any indication at all as to what lies underneath.

It’s been finished in a quirky mix of rough-sawn shingles, an array of windows (ranging in shape from plain old rectangles, to round and octagon windows), and a beveled entrance door. If there’s a book on quintessential cottages, this home would surely make the cut.

The interior continues with the kitsch theme. The framed openings between living rooms feature rounded heads. Painted pine has been used to finish the walls, and it’s been left unfinished for the curved ceiling of the bus. They’ve disguised the wheel wells with a love seat, and a raised hearth for the wood-stove.

The bus accommodates a full-size kitchen, which makes cooking for three a breeze. They’ve salvaged and refurbished an old antique Frigidaire for the refrigerator. There’s also a gas stove, and a large ceramic sink. The living room follows on from the kitchen, and leads into the bedroom.

The bedroom is set at half-height, providing valuable space above for another sleeping area and storage. The entry to the bedroom features a dramatic arch, echoing the styling of the doorways. Throughout the home, they’ve created small-built in storage cupboards.
